Phalloplasty - Frequently Asked Questions

questions and answers for phalloplasty for penis enlargement
Does phalloplasty really work? How much bigger will my penis be after penis enlargement surgery?
Yes phalloplasty really works! Depending on the technique your surgeon chooses, you can gain up to 3 cm in length and 20-40 % in girth. Please note that penile thickening results are not permanent, lasting anywhere from 2 to 5 years, depending on the type of implant used. You can learn more about implants over the what is phalloplasty surgery article.

All penile enlargement techniques used today are thoroughly researched, tested and have a success ratio of more than 90 %.

How much does it cost?
The average cost of penis enlargement surgery in Australia ranges from $5,000 to $10,000. This is just an average number. The exact cost depends on the procedure chosen (lengthening, widening, or a combination), the techniques used and the experience of the surgeon etc.

What are some the benefits of having penis enlargement surgery?
Strictly psychological. The patient ends up with a longer and/or thicker penis. In return, this usually boosts his confidence and he may gain greater sexual libido, stronger erections, resolve erectile dysfunction issues relate to anxiety etc

How is penile enlargement done?
There are many different techniques used for penile enlargement. For penile length increase, the most common technique involves the release of the suspensory and fundiform ligament at the base of the penis. This ligament essentially "hides" a part of the penis inside the body.

The surgeon may also add tissue expanders to prevent contraction of the ligament in the future. There is also the option to have a scrotoplasty. This procedure reduces the skin of the scrotum giving the appearance of a larger penis

Finally, fat injections or tissue grafts can be used to add girth to the penis shaft or the glans (head) of the penis. Glans enlargement is minimally invasive and usually performed with the help of a small needle.

Please consult our main article (first link on the horizontal menu) for more info on all these techniques.

Will the angle of my penis change?
Most patients (about 85%) report no erection angle change. For the rest, the angle change is usually minimal and doesn't interfere with penile function.

Will I have any permanent loss of feeling?
This is highly unlikely. Expect some soreness during the first weeks which resolves by its' own.

At what age can someone have penis enlargement surgery?
Talking from a strictly physiological point of view, any healthy male over 18 is a suitable candidate. However, some doctors may refuse to operate on very young men especially those with a normally sized penis. I think it''s better to give your penis 1-2 years of "practise" and thinking  before you decide to have penis enlargement surgery.

Why do I have to do stretching exercises after my surgery?
Stretching exercises are used to prevent the penis from retracting and healing in its original position. When fat grafts are used, these exercises also prevent clumping and other irregularities from occurring.

Why do I have to wrap my penis after surgery?
This prevents the penis from “telescoping” and clumping the fat.

Any chances the fat reabsorbs after girth enhancement ?
Yes, it is possible for some of the transferred fat to reabsorb. Regrettably, this means you will need further girth treatments ( by transferring more fat.) in the future to maintain the increase in girth.

Can the length and girth of my penis be increased at the same time ?
As mentioned before, yes it is possible to have both lengthening and girth enhancement at the same time.

How long does penile enlargement surgery take?
A typical phalloplasty takes one to three hours until completion.

How long do I need to stay in the hospital?
Most patients return home within 1-2 days after surgery

Is there a lot of post-op pain?
No, although there is some pain and soreness. Pain is easily manageable with pain medication.

I changed my mind. I don't want surgery. Are there any alternatives?
The only clinically tested and found to be effective alternative is using a penis extender.

How soon can I have sex after male enhancement surgery?
Most patients have to wait six to eight weeks before engaging in penetrative sex. In some cases, gentle masturbation may be allowed approximately 1 week after surgery. Gentle masturbation involves the massaging of the glans (head of the penis) exclusively.

Will insurance cover my phalloplasty surgery?
Unless you have a truly small penis - what is medically described as a micro penis - and the length measures less than three and two thirds inches when erect the chances of receiving coverage from your insurance company are slim to none.

What to expect from glanular (head) enlargement surgery?
Although greater than 30% increase in the flare of the glans can be achieved, a reasonable expectation would be something in the range of 10% to 15% increase in the flare of the proximal 1/3 of your glans.

Are the length and girth gains greater in the flaccid or erect state?
Length and girth gains are usually greater when flaccid.

What should I expect after surgery? When can I return back to work and other activities? When can I have sex?
First you will wake up from the general anaesthesia, either in the operating table or in your room.
Your penis will be wrapped in dressings that will need frequent changing, as instructed by your surgeon.

You will stay in the hospital or an outpatient facility for a maximum of 1-2 days. Often, patients are allowed to return home the same day. Please make arrangements with someone to take you to your home as you will not be allowed to drive. As aforementioned, there is always some minimal pain and discomfort after surgery and this is why you will be given prescribed pain relievers. The penis and the area around it will be quite swollen for a few days. Expect all swelling to go away after 3 to 6 months.

Many doctors recommend their patients to do certain exercises and to use a penis extender for optimal gains.

Ideally, you should stop smoking for 2-3 weeks after surgery as it slows down the healing response. It's better if you quit it all together before your phalloplasty surgery. Showering increases the risk of infection and should be avoided for a week or more depending on your case. During this time you can use cleansing pads, a sponge or washcloth to clean your body.

You should also avoid all sexual activities that involve your penis (including masturbation) for 1-2 months, as instructed by your doctor. In general, the more extensive the surgery, the longer you have to wait.

Any strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 2 weeks. Consider taking a leave from your job after surgery, unless you have a desk job.

What type of underwear should I wear after surgery?
You should wear loose-fitting boxer shorts during the first days. This will help by letting your penis to hang down after surgery. Furthermore, your penis will feel much more comfortable if you do not wear tight underwear.

Is penis enlargement safe?
Yes. All surgeries come with some risks, but the risks associated with penile enlargement tend to be rare. If you notice anything weird like excessive bleeding; collection of fluid under the skin of your penis, signs of infection, severe pain, chest pains or difficulty with breathing then contact your surgeon immediately. Equally serious but again very rare complications include thrombosis (blood clots), nerve damage and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). Again, these complication require immediate medical attention..

Are there any guarantees about my new size?
No. No doctor can predict with 100% certainty the results from your surgery.
